About Ruhi Hand Block Printer
Ruhi Hand Block Printer is a hand block printing house in Bagru, Rajasthan.
We are not a shop that buys finished sarees from a wholesale market and resells them. We buy unprinted cloth, prepare it ourselves, and have it hand block printed here in Bagru by the artisan printers we work with — to our own designs and our own colourways. The saree that reaches you started with us as plain grey fabric.
That is the whole difference, and it’s worth spelling out, because almost everything sold online as “Bagru print” is bought in ready-printed.
How a Ruhi saree/Suit is actually made
Five stages, in order. We’re involved in four of them.
1. Buying the base cloth We buy grey and RFD (ready-for-dyeing) fabric directly from mills and weavers — cotton, mulmul, linen, Chanderi silk-cotton, Maheshwari, Kota Doria, modal Etc Grey fabric is cloth straight off the loom, unbleached and unfinished. RFD has been prepared to take dye. Nobody has printed on it yet, which means every design decision after this point is ours.
2. Processing and preparation Before a block ever touches it, the cloth has to be readied — scouring / bleaching / washing / harda (myrobalan) treatment / whatever process required.
3. Design and colour We decide the motifs, the block combinations, the borders, the pallu, and the colourway for each batch.
4. Hand block printing in Bagru The prepared cloth goes to the artisan printing units we work with in Bagru. The printers stamp it by hand, block by block, colour by colour. The cloth is ours throughout — they bring the skill and the table, and it comes back to us finished.
We want to be exact about this, because a lot of brands aren’t: we don’t stand at the table and print it ourselves. Hand block printing is a trained craft and it belongs to the printers who do it. What we do is run the production — the cloth, the designs, the colours, and the checking are ours.
5. Checking, and what we reject Every batch is looked over before it’s listed: print alignment, dye bleed, colour consistency across the length, fabric faults.
Who we are
Ruhi was started in 2019 by Rukmani Saini with a simple idea: to bring the distinctive beauty of Bagru hand-block prints online and make them accessible to customers beyond the local market. Today, Rukmani is involved in the day-to-day running of the business, including selecting fabrics and designs, coordinating production, checking finished products, and managing customer orders.
Our connection to Bagru textiles is personal. Rukmani’s parents worked with artisan units in the textile and printing industry for around 20 years, giving our family a practical understanding of how these fabrics are prepared and printed. Today, we work closely with around 10 artisan printing units in Bagru, providing them with fabrics and coordinating the printing process before the finished textiles are carefully selected and offered to our customers.
What we’re careful about claiming
“Printed in Bagru,” not “made in Bagru.” Our printing happens in Bagru. The weaving usually doesn’t. Chanderi and Maheshwari cloth is woven in Madhya Pradesh, Kota Doria around Kota. We buy that cloth unprinted and print it here — which is how the trade has always worked — so we say printed, not made.
Dyes, by range.
We use different dyeing and printing methods depending on the fabric and collection. Our Dabu and Indigo ranges use natural dyes, while our other prints use azo-free chemical dyes. We work with our artisan printing units in Bagru to select the appropriate dyes and printing process for each collection.
Because dyeing and printing methods can vary by fabric and design, we describe the dye type for individual products wherever relevant rather than making a blanket natural-dye claim across our entire collection.
Handmade means variation. Slight shifts in colour between pieces, small irregularities in the repeat, a motif that sits a hair off the line — these are what hand printing looks like. They are not defects, and we’d rather tell you that before you order than after.
